🎁 OpenAI finally launches SORA for the public
On Monday, OpenAI launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of its 12-day “ship-mas” product release series. The version launching today is what OpenAI calls a "turbo" variant—a streamlined version of the Sora model introduced in February, optimized for cost and speed.
Insights for you:
OpenAI has released Sora, its long-awaited AI video generator for the ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscriptions.
The service will be available in the US and many other countries, but notably absent from most EU countries and the UK.
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers can access Sora through their existing subscriptions at no extra charge. ChatGPT Plus subscribers are limited to 50 monthly generations at 720p resolution, with a 5-second limit. Pro subscribers are given 500 priority videos with unlimited slow-speed generation at 1080p resolution and a 20-second limit.

Amazon
💡 Amazon releases new Nova AI models for text, image, and video
Amazon announced its Nova family of AI models today for generating and analyzing text, images, and videos. While testing shows the top-tier Nova Pro model keeps up with competitors in several areas, it doesn't push any new boundaries in what AI can do.
Insights for you:
Amazon has introduced the Nova family of basic AI models for text, image, and video analysis, designed to optimize the price/performance ratio. The most powerful model,
Nova Pro keeps up with the competition in benchmarks but does not set new standards. A more powerful model is planned for early 2025 and could compete with OpenAI's o1.
By developing its models, Amazon aims to close the strategic gap with cloud competitors Microsoft and Google. The Nova models are initially available exclusively in three US regions via Amazon Web Services.
AI Research
⚛️ AI-supported research discovers 44% more new materials
MIT economist Aidan Toner-Rodgers conducted a large, controlled study examining how an AI research tool affected productivity at an unnamed US company with over 1,000 researchers. The teams using the AI tool developed 44% more new materials and filed 39% more patents.
Insights for you:
In a controlled study, an MIT economist examined the impact of an AI tool on materials research at a US company with over 1,000 researchers that develops inorganic materials for health, optics, and industry.
The tool combines graph neural networks with reinforcement learning and was trained with data from the Materials Project and the Alexandria Materials Database.
The study found that high-performing researchers benefited most from the AI tool, while weaker researchers saw little benefit. However, the job satisfaction of the teams using the AI declined as the system took on more creative tasks.
