VideoLAN
🟠 VLC Media Player to Use AI for Subtitles without Internet

VideoLAN demoed at CES 2025 an upcoming feature for VLC Media Player that uses generative AI to automatically create subtitles on the fly based on the media content being played and can even translate across languages in real-time.

Insights for you:

  • Popular free media player VLC will soon include AI to generate subtitles for videos automatically and translate them into over 100 languages. You will also be able to save the translations to an SRT file.

  • The feature will use open-source AI models that can run locally on the user’s device without connecting to the internet.

  • The non-profit organization VideoLAN also announced that their open-source media player app has crossed over 6 billion downloads.

Stability AI
🐘 Stability AI's New AI can turn a single image into a 3D object

Stability AI has unveiled SPAR3D, a new 3D reconstruction model that can create complete 3D objects from a single image in under a second. SPAR3D is now free for commercial and non-commercial use under the permissive Stability AI Community License.

Insights for you:

  • Stability AI and Nvidia have introduced SPAR3D, a 3D reconstruction model that can generate and edit complete 3D object structures from a single image in real time.

  • SPAR3D allows users to directly edit point clouds and convert them into finished meshes in as little as 0.3 seconds, providing high control over 3D object creation.

  • The model can generate highly detailed 3D meshes from a single image in as little as 0.7 seconds per object.

Microsoft
Microsoft's rStar-Math method can power up small AI models

Microsoft Research Asia has developed a training method called rStar-Math that enables small language models to match or exceed the math performance of much larger AI systems, such as OpenAI's o1-preview.

Insights for you:

  • Microsoft Research Asia has developed rStar-Math, a method that allows small language models with only 1.5 to 7 billion parameters to match or outperform OpenAI's o1-preview and o1-mini models on mathematical tasks.

  • rStar-Math uses the Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) technique to systematically explore different solutions and learn from the results. For each solution step, rStar-Math generates working Python code and provides a justification, with the code checked for errors.

  • The rStar-Math approach is currently limited to mathematical textual tasks and relies heavily on the ability to verify code. It does not yet support geometric tasks with visual elements.
