😒 GPT-5 is Behind Schedule with Getting More Expensive
OpenAI’s GPT-5 is reportedly over budget, months behind schedule, and not certain to work. As The Wall Street Journal reported, there may not be enough data in the world to make the project, known as GPT-5 and code-named Orion, smart enough.
Insights for you:
WSJ said that OpenAI is not seeing the exponential leap in its next-gen model that researchers and OpenAI investors had expected.
According to the report, GPT-5 (codenamed Project Orion) has been in the works for over 18 months and was originally expected to be released in mid-2024.
OpenAI has held at least two large training sessions, each involving months of crunching vast amounts of data to make Orion smarter. With each test run, sources told new problems cropped up and the software fell short of the results for which researchers had hoped.

📱 xAI is testing a standalone iOS app for Grok
Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has launched a beta version of its standalone iOS app for the Grok chatbot. TThe Grok Beta iOS app can also also answer queries requiring real-time knowledge. However, it is unclear whether xAI is also planning an Android version of the AI chatbot.
Insights for you:
Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is testing a standalone iOS app for its chatbot, Grok. Until now, the app was available only to X users.
The app, currently in beta, can access real-time data from the web and X and offers generative AI features like rewriting text, summarizing long paragraphs, a little bit of Q&A, and generating images from text prompts, too.
To complement the app, xAI is also developing a dedicated website, Grok.com, which will bring the chatbot to desktops and other devices.
AI Research
📈 Study shows 'Test-time compute scaling' for better AI systems
Researchers at Hugging Face have demonstrated significant performance improvements in open-source language models by intelligently scaling compute during inference, drawing inspiration from OpenAI's o1 model. Verifiers or reward models play a central role in evaluating the quality of the generated solutions and guiding the search.
Insights for you:
Hugging Face researchers show that the performance of open-source language models can be significantly improved by intelligently scaling the computational power of inference, inspired by OpenAI's o1 model.
Different search strategies are combined with reward models. In practical tests, a Llama model with only one billion parameters achieved the performance of a model eight times larger.
A 3-billion-parameter model even outperformed the 22-fold larger 70-billion-parameter Llama 3.1 model using optimized computational methods.
