🥊 Now DeepSeek AI Got a New Competitor?
DeepSeek tried to be on top but now it has a new rival. Hugging Face researchers launched a new project called Open-R1. It aims to create a fully open-source duplicate of DeepSeek’s R1 model and make all its components available to the AI community.
Insights for you:
Researchers from Hugging Face say they’re attempting to recreate Chinese startup DeepSeek’s R1 “reasoning” model.
One of the project researchers claims R1 is not open-source because it can be used without restrictions. Also, the datasets and code it was trained on, have not been made publicly available.
The goal of the Open-R1 project is to replicate R1 in a few weeks, relying in part on Hugging Face’s Science Cluster, a dedicated research server with 768 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

👎️ Popular AI models failed at "Humanity's Last Exam"
Center for AI Safety and Scale AI research team has developed a new benchmark that reveals the current limitations of LLMs. The benchmark, called Humanity’s Last Exam, includes thousands of crowdsourced questions touching on subjects like mathematics, humanities, and the natural sciences.
Insights for you:
An international research team has developed "Humanity's Last Exam,” a new benchmark test with 3,000 questions covering more than 100 specialist fields.
Almost 1,000 experts collaborated to create this comprehensive evaluation system for testing AI capabilities.
Current AI systems perform poorly on the exam with less than 10% accuracy, while showing extreme overconfidence. GPT-4o solves only 3.3% of the tasks correctly, while OpenAI's o1 achieves 9.1% and Gemini 6.2%.
